Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Kathy @ Bermudaonion weblog where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading.  If you want to play along, grab the button, and join the fun!  (Don’t forget to leave a link in the comments if you’re participating.)

This weeks words come from A Thousand Rooms of Dream and Fear by Atiq Rahimi, translated by Sarah Maguire and Yama Yari.

abeyance – “I’d much rather believe in the reality of their performance than in the utter abeyance of annihilation!”

Abeyance means temporary inactivity, suspension, cessation.

abattoir – “Enayat’s brother an his friends went to the abattoir, anointed some sheets with sheep’s blood and then sold then to the neighbors.”

An abattoir is a slaughterhouse.

So, what new words did you learn this week?
